Binge-worthy Thrillers to Keep You Warm
Currently in Netflix Top 10 of TV shows are “His & Hers” and “Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials.” Two crime-thrillers that are highly entertaining and both will grab you with their surprise endings.
His & Hers
⭐️⭐️⭐️(5)
Easily bingeable with 6 episodes, “His & Hers” centers on news journalist Anna Andrews and detective Jack Harper. And in the wake of a grizzly murder, the two dramatically clash as both are suspicious of one another. Actors Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal go head-to-head with passion and fierceness as they uncover the town’s secrets, lies and betrayals. Notable performances include Sunita Mani as Jack’s determined investigative partner, Pablo Schreiber as Anna’s gruff cameraman and Chris Bauer as the murder victim’s husband. Set in rural Georgia, the show can get a bit steamy - some episodes, steamier than others. Series developer, co-writer and co-director William Oldroyd caught my attention with his 2023 psychological-drama film “Eileen.” Dark and ominous seem to be a realm he works well in. “His & Hers,” based on the novel by Alice Feeney.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5)
The more family-friendly of the two, “Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials” brings you to the roaring 1920s where Lady Bundle and her mother Lady Caterham host a party at their country estate. That evening, Bundle makes dinner-date plans with Gerry, an overnight guest. A prank including eight alarm clocks set by Gerry’s friends goes wrong, and he is found dead the next morning. Bundle suspects foul play, and aggressively investigates, much to the dismay of Scotland Yard’s Superintendent Battle.
Just like its source material, Agatha Christie’s novel “The Seven Dials Mystery,” there’s a large list of suspects and plenty of lush English countryside that we’ve come to admire in all of these beloved whodunnits. Yet creator Chris Chibnall (both of Broadchurch AND Doctor Who fame!) has given us something remarkably fresh and new. There’s relevancy as this adaptation touches on the overreach of power, corruption and long-term effects of trauma. Mia McKenna-Bruce is splendid as fiery, witty and charming Lady Eileen “Bundle.” Paired with the great Martin Freeman as the tenacious and stoically frustrated Battle, the two make quite the dynamic duo. An easy bingeable 3 one-hour episodes. It also feels like a very good 2 hour movie. And if that hasn’t sold you, there’s a scene on a train!
